a quick disclaimer - i definitely don't mean to dismiss the criticisms of how colourism was handled in this series, and i do encourage you to seek out reviews by own voices reviewers (as i am not dark-skinned) to see what their issues with kuang's portrayal of some characters were, i just think that the context of the series is important, and with regards to altan's character specifically, i felt like i just didn't really see him being demonized or villainized in the books.
