In a dramatic political comeback, Tarique Rahman is set to become Prime Minister after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party swept Bangladesh's 13th parliamentary elections with a reported 216 seats — a two-thirds super-majority — in the first vote since Sheikh Hasina's 2024 ouster, with turnout at around 60 percent. India's Narendra Modi quickly congratulated Rahman despite tensions over Hasina's presence in India and the BNP's call for her extradition. The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and allies won about 76 seats, while the student-led National Citizen Party secured just six; the banned Awami League rejected the polls as deceptive, and both Jamaat and the NCP flagged irregularities. Alongside the vote, a referendum passed with roughly 60 percent backing constitutional "July Charter" reforms, including a second parliamentary chamber, term limits for the prime minister, stronger presidential powers, expanded rights protections, greater representation for women, and judicial independence measures — setting the stage for sweeping political change.
