Pakistan was shaken near Layyah, Layyah District, Punjab, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.8 only 8 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Layyah, Layyah District, Punjab, Pakistan, around noon on Wednesday, September 11th, 2024, at 12:28 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Karor (pop. 25,600) located 24 km from the epicenter, and Layyah (pop. 79,000) 29 km away.
In Fatehpur (pop. 18,100) located 46 km from the epicenter, Taunsa (pop. 44,900) 49 km away, Bhakkar (pop. 82,000) 63 km away, Kot Addu (pop. 104,200) 78 km away, and Dera Ismail Khan (pop. 101,600) 79 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking
