A playthrough of Hi Tech Expressions' 1993 platformer for PCs running Dos, Tom & Jerry.

Two years after bringing Software Creations' Tom & Jerry platformer to the NES (   • Tom & Jerry (NES) Playthrough   ), Hi Tech Expressions tapped the talents of Albino Frog Software, a one-man development house, for a PC port.

Tom & Jerry is one of the better NES-to-PC ports to come out of the early 1990s. It looks similar to the original, it runs at a reasonably smooth framerate (provided you were playing it on a high-end 486), and it supports joystick controls. Nobody in their right mind would choose to play this over the NES game, but it at least looks the part. Most of the time.

But notice how some of the enemy sprites, the cutscene images, and the last boss's background look like digitized screen grabs from the NES game? Yuck. It doesn't support any sound cards, so there's no music, and the sound effects are all done with the internal speaker. The bonus areas are missing, and the controls are made frustrating by the wonky way that the game handles the trajectory of Jerry's marbles.

As a big fan of the NES game, I was excited to put this version through its paces, but I came away disappointed. It's not a bad effort for something that was made by one guy, but I imagine it would've turned out far better had Hi Tech Expressions been willing to spend more than the bare minimum on its production.

And what's with the Sega Genesis Mortal Kombat font?
