Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)

Fidelio, Op. 72, Act 1: March

Did you know that: Fidelio, is the only opera by the great Ludwig van Beethoven himself. The libretto was originally prepared by Joseph Sonnleithner from the French of Jean-Nicolas Bouilly. The opera premiered at Vienna's Theater an der Wien on 20 November 1805. The following year, Beethoven's friend Stephan von Breuning rewrote the libretto, shortening the work from three acts to two. After further work on the libretto by Georg Friedrich Treitschke, a final version was performed at the Kärntnertortheater on 23 May 1814. As these libretto revisions were going on, Beethoven was also revising some of the music. By convention, only the final version is called Fidelio, and the others are referred to as Leonore.

Instrumentation (original): piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns, 3 trumpets (one offstage), 2 trombones, timpani, and strings.

Instrumentation ‘’March’’ (arranged and orchestrated as seen in the video): 4 flutes (fourth player doubling piccolo), 4 oboes, 4 clarinets, 4 bassoons (fourth player doubling contrabassoon), 8 horns, 4 trumpets, timpani, strings and basso continuo.

I made this video and the version in the style ‘’Alla Victor Borge’’ named after well-known Danish-American pianist and comedian, Victor Borge (1909-2000).

And I would like to thank my mother for thinking of this march. When she hears it, it brings good memories of the old times. Wealthy, extravagant and well-dressed men and women dance in a fancy decorated ballroom.
