We met Cheri in Houston, Texas. She’s fun, energetic, and living life to the fullest. But she also has a very powerful story to share. Like many of us, she thought she looked better with a tan. That was until her life was nearly cut short due to a serious melanoma. You can hear part of Cheri’s story in this reel.

Would you smoke cigarettes? Would you hang out in a building you knew had exposed asbestos? Probably not because it’s common knowledge how dangerous these substances are for your health and that exposure increases your risk for cancer.

Would you use a tanning bed?

You’re probably aware that indoor tanning beds use ultraviolet (UV) light to tan people's skin. The use of tanning beds has been a popular trend for achieving a glowing tan all year round. But what you may not know is how dangerous it is. Using an indoor tanning device significantly increases your risk of developing melanoma, which is a type of skin cancer.

It is a common misconception that indoor tanning is safer than outdoor sunlight. It is not.

Exposure to UV radiation from indoor tanning devices has been shown to cause DNA damage in skin cells, and is associated with an increased risk of developing melanoma, squamous and basal cell carcinomas, aka skin cancer.

In 2009, as a response to data highlighting the risks associated with indoor tanning, the World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified ultraviolet light emitted from tanning beds as carcinogenic, and placed artificial sources of ultraviolet radiation alongside tobacco and asbestos in the highest category of carcinogen (source https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles...)
