A sinus infection (sinusitis) is an inflammation or infection of the sinuses, the air-filled spaces in the skull near the nose and eyes. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, or allergies. The condition often follows a cold or upper respiratory infection that causes mucus buildup and blockage in the sinuses.

Symptoms include nasal congestion, facial pain or pressure, headache, postnasal drip, and sometimes fever or fatigue. Sinus infections can be acute (lasting less than four weeks) or chronic (lasting more than 12 weeks). Treatment depends on the cause and may include rest, hydration, decongestants, saline rinses, antibiotics (if bacterial), or, in severe cases, surgical intervention.
