Mental Health Disorders: Unseen epidemic | Episode 6: Part 2 | Sawal Sehat Ka

In the sixth episode of our series on health ‘Sawal Sehat Ka’, we bring to you an issue that doesn’t attract much attention but is affecting large swathes of population in an unseen manner — mental health. According to a World Health Organisation report, an estimated seven crore people suffer from various mental disorders in India, which go unrecognised and undiagnosed, but impact lives of people in many different ways. In the second part of the episode The Wire’s senior editor Arfa Khanum Sherwani interviewed Gaurav Bansal on how faith-based healers are misleading people away from science and medicine when it comes to seeking mental health care. The patients, thus, end up being looted of time and money, and worst, getting their disorders aggravated.

In the first part, we spoke to various experts to understand the landscape of mental health problems in India, and how stigma, which comes from various sections of society, becomes a major hindrance for seeking care.
