"Being an entrepreneur is a public service, it is about to serve." Thomas Bata.
Imagine, how your life would be, if there existed a management system, that embeds in it all modern-day buzzwords – Agile, Beyond Budgeting, Open Book Accounting and Public Salaries, OKR, Scrum, Customer Centricity, Holacracy, People First, Kanban, Kaizen, Empowerment, Data-Driven decision making, time-to-market, and many others, that we try to implement to organizations with the armies of coaches and masters.
And yet, such a system existed and proved to be a vital element for the success of a company – Bata Shoes Company.
In my talk, I will dive deep into the secrets of an innovative Bata Management System (BMS). It was born around 1910, from the necessity of managing a small but fast-growing manufacturing business in the last days of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy to the modern corporation of 70.000 people operating in 60 countries in pre-war Czechoslovakia.
I will discuss the similarities of BMS with the principles of today’s Agile movement including the Musk Method, Beyond Budgeting like financial management, knowledge management, human capital creation, ethics in entrepreneurship, innovation, and many more aspects. Managing an organization of 70.000 in a semi-centralized manner and without computers is a challenge. Moreover, BMS provides an instant picture of the organization at any given time. Further, we will have a look at how the production was organized, self-organization demanded, entrepreneurship supported, work-life balance achieved, and value to customers and communities delivered. The talk will be accompanied by many pictures and examples.
