Kyle Brew, "God Damn," // GemsOnVHS™

Three years of the Gems in the Rough contest have given us some great artists. One of them, who placed 2nd in both 2020 and 2021 contests, is Kyle Brew. From way out in Melbourne, Australia, Kyle threw his little cowboy hat into the ring and sent in some incredible bangers like "Marlboro Man". Well, he didn't win, but I have always wanted to explore the soundscape of the Queen's former penal colony. One can only learn so much by watching every episode of All Aussie Adventures. What kind of music was this continent of delinquents producing?

Some great stuff, it turns out. Immediately upon getting off the airplane, some poor lad approached me at the cafe. He recognized me from Nashville, been to a GemsOnVHS houseshow. Small world, but a good sign, this trip was now ordained by serendipity. Maybe these Aussies have good taste after all, I thought. Kyle picked me up in his elderly yet stylish Datsun, and showed me what the streets of Victoria had on offer. We discussed the finer points of Jimmy Barnes and Slim Dusty. We ate chicken parm, a local delicacy (no pasta involved in theirs; just giant chicken). We made new friends (his roommates, Seb, Jas and Jared, and the boys from the Slingers). We met old friends (Kayla Saito, great seeing you!). We did it all, honestly.

Also, he played this song, which I'm quite fond of. Thanks for letting me crash at your place and into your world for a couple days, Kyle! You can't enter the contest anymore, and we will be friends forever. Now expect me back in December; we've got drop bears to film!
