The Apple TV plus sci-fi series Silo brings to life the intricate world created by author Hugh Howey in his popular book series. The first book, Wool, was originally written and self-published as an e-book by Howey in 2011, twelve years before the show premiered in 2023. Howey then expanded on the Silo universe with two more books, Shift and Dust, released in 2013. The Silo series on Apple TV plus is based on the entire trilogy, with at least one more season planned to explore the later books in more depth. As a result, the show features rich and complex world-building that requires a bit of extra explanation.
Silo follows the story of a community living underground in a massive, vertical structure, seeking refuge from the toxic environment on the surface. The people in the silo are convinced that a catastrophic event, which took place centuries ago, made life on Earth uninhabitable. The series features Rebecca Ferguson as Juliet, who steps into the role of Sheriff after the previous Sheriff, Holston, chooses to leave the silo in search of answers about the outside world. While the show hasn't yet fully explained the purpose or origins of the silo, viewers eager for answers can find them in the Silo book trilogy.
This video is heavily based on spoilers from the books, proceed with extreme caution.
According to the details in the Silo books, the silo is probably located somewhere underground within the continental United States. This assumption is supported by the presence of English-speaking actors with American accents in the Apple TV plus series. Although the books don't pinpoint the exact location of the silo, the themes of the underground society, which reflect Western influences, suggest that the silo is situated in what was once the territory of the United States before the apocalypse occurred.
