Keep your attic clean and mold-free with these helpful tips! Attic mold growth is a common and complex problem in many homes. However, the way that most companies in Pittsburgh treat it almost guarantees that it will come back. In this video we show you Insulwise's method of treating attic mold, which focuses on first eliminating the sources of moisture which allow attic mold to grow in the first place. After air sealing the attic floor and installing ventilation measures, we finally spray and kill the mold and lastly re-insulate the attic. After these steps have been completed we guarantee that it will not grow back.

If you have high levels of condensation in your attic, or notice high levels of moisture in your attic, than you are likely at risk for developing an attic mold problem. The best ways to combat this are:

1) Making sure that your roof does not have any active leaks. I'd say approx 20% of the homes that we work in have some form of existing roof leak in the attic. Small roof leaks can contribute A LOT of moisture to your attic.

2) Air sealing your attic floor

3) Properly ventilating your roof and attic. 1 sq ft of NFA (net free air) for every 300 sq ft of attic floor, divided between intake and exhaust ventilation is a good rough guide. Many of the homes we see that have mold problems have plenty of exhaust ventilation, but minimal if any intake ventilation (soffit vents, under shingle intake vents, etc). It's my theory that too much exhaust ventilation exacerbates the natural stack effect forces that occur in homes during the winter, causing more warm air and moisture from the home to be pulled upward into the attic.

4) Once you have eliminated the moisture source from your attic, and you've fixed any ventilation problems that your roof had, you will have likely eliminated the ability for mold to grow in the first place. And this is what ultimately solves the problem.
