Disposition of the rebuilt West Country and Battle of Britain classes: 11 preserved; 39 scrapped

34023 Blackmoor Vale, 34051 Winston Churchill, 34066 Spitfire and 34086 219 Squadron were the only unrebuilt West Country and Battle of Britain locos that were not sold for scrap and instead went straight into preservation. The remaining surviving Bulleid Light Pacifics went to the Woodham Brothers scrapyards in Barry, South Wales where in 297 locomotives of all classes were to be broken up. They languished there for years until they were purchased by preservationists. They were kept in storage rather than being broken up. Woodham Brothers scrapyards found it more easier to scrap railway wagons and some railway carriages.
