Recorded in 28 March 2025 by Persian Walker
Tehran, the vibrant capital of Iran, transforms into a lively tapestry of colors, traditions, and communal joy during Nowruz, the Persian New Year. Celebrated on the vernal equinox, Nowruz marks the arrival of spring and symbolizes renewal and rebirth. In 2025, the equinox occurred on March 20 at 12:31:30 PM Iran Standard Time.
In the weeks leading up to Nowruz, Tehran's streets and markets bustle with activity as residents prepare for the festivities. A central element of the celebration is the "Haft-Seen" table, an arrangement of seven symbolic items starting with the Persian letter 'S,' each representing hopes for the new year, such as health, prosperity, and wisdom.
The city also hosts various cultural events, including traditional music performances, street festivals, and the ancient ritual of "Chaharshanbe Suri," celebrated on the eve of the last Wednesday before Nowruz. During this event, people jump over bonfires, symbolizing the purification of the soul and the ushering in of enlightenment.
Amidst these celebrations, the National Botanical Garden of Iran offers a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Located in the Chitgar area of Tehran, this expansive 150-hectare garden serves as a sanctuary for plant enthusiasts and those seeking tranquility.
The garden is meticulously designed to represent various regions of Iran, featuring diverse plant species from the Alborz and Zagros mountains, as well as the Caspian, Turanian, and Persian Gulf regions. Visitors can wander through sections dedicated to non-Iranian flora, including Himalayan, American, Japanese, African, and Australian plants, each cultivated to mimic their native habitats.
During Nowruz, the National Botanical Garden becomes particularly enchanting as spring blooms emerge, symbolizing renewal and growth. The harmonious blend of natural beauty and cultural
significance makes it an ideal spot for reflection and celebration during the Persian New Year.
