Gunbattle near Srinagar as violence escalates

(29 Jun 2021) Indian security forces were engaged in a gunfight with armed rebels near the capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir on Monday, amid escalating tensions in the disputed region.
According to the Kashmir Zone Police Twitter account, the gunfight began in the afternoon in Srinagar's Parimpora area.
Footage showed civilians being escorted away from the area, while soldiers patrolled the perimeter around a house believed to be where the rebels were holed up.
Earlier, suspected militants had fatally shot a police officer, his wife and their daughter.
India's military also said it thwarted a major threat when it intercepted two drones flying over an army base earlier on Monday, a day after suspected explosives-laden drones were used to attack an air base in the disputed region.
Muslim-majority Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan, and the Himalayan region is claimed by both in its entirety.
Rebels have been fighting against Indian rule since 1989.
