Every year an estimated 640,000 tons of fishing nets and gear pollute our oceans. Old fishing gear and nets are 4 times as dangerous compared to any plastic material floating in the ocean. That is why Costa teamed up with Bureo to help Untangle our oceans and create recyclable sunglasses. Sunglass Rob and Costa Ambassador Ryan discuss why fishing nets are being dumped into the ocean and how Costa is working to fix it.

In Chile fisherman are taxed by the weight of their boat after being on the water. To ensure the boat is taxed less, fisherman will dump old fishing nets to lose weight and keep all the fish. In result, these nets are damaging ecosystems at an extreme rate.

To help combat this problem Costa teamed up with Bureo. Bureo will now buy back old fishing nets from fisherman before they weigh in for the day. Bureo then cleans off the nets and send them to their recycler in Santiago, Chile. At the recycler, Buroe will break down the nets into little black pellets that can be used for injection modeling purposes. Costa takes the pellets and molds them into four new sunglasses, the Untangled Collection.

The Untangled collection features four new frames: the Pescador, Baffin, Victoria, and Caldera. Each frame is 100% made of recycled fishing nets and only comes with Costa’s 580G lenses. Instead of the typical hydrolite material, Costa used a PLUSfoam material that provides a comfortable fit and it is recyclable. Costa also used recyclable aluminum for the logo on the temples. Essentially, at the end of its life, each frame from the Costa Untangled collection can be recycled.
