Indian Navy Warships: Kamorta Class, LCU, Fast Attack Craft, Nilgiri Class Frigate

The Indian Navy’s fleet comprises a diverse range of warships designed for various combat and support roles. From stealth frigates to high-speed attack craft, each class plays a vital role in securing India’s maritime interests.

1. Kamorta Class (Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvette)
Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE).

Designed for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) with stealth features.

Equipped with torpedoes, depth charges, and an advanced sonar suite.

Warships: INS Kamorta, INS Kadmatt, INS Kiltan, INS Kavaratti.

2. Landing Craft Utility (LCU)
Amphibious transport ships for troop and equipment deployment.

Built by GRSE for island operations and logistics support.

Can carry tanks, armored vehicles, and up to 160 troops.

Warships: INS LCU L51 to L58.

3. Fast Attack Craft (FAC)
High-speed patrol boats for coastal defense and interception.

Armed with machine guns, missiles, and close-range weapons.

Used for anti-piracy, surveillance, and special forces operations.

Warships: INS Tarmugli, INS Tillanchang, INS Trinkat (various classes).

4. Nilgiri Class (Next-Gen Stealth Frigate)
Based on the Project 17A frigate design.

Built by Mazagon Dock Ltd. (MDL) and GRSE.

Equipped with BrahMos missiles, advanced radars, and stealth technology.

Warships: INS Nilgiri, INS Himgiri, INS Udaygiri, INS Dunagiri, INS Taragiri, INS Vindhyagiri, INS Mahendragiri.

About the host:

Lt. Commander Nikhil Kumar Chandrakala (Retd.) served as the Youngest Panelist on the Officers' Selection Board of the Indian Navy. He is the youngest Group Testing Officer to have served in the Indian Armed Forces since 1947!

Lt. Cdr. Nikhil KC (Retd.) has also served in some coveted appointments onboard frigates in the Western Fleet of the Indian Navy, on ships of Killer Squadron, legacy bearer of 1971 war. He was also Aide-De-Camp of the Admiral Commanding Maharashtra and Gujarat Naval Area.

As Captain of the Warship – Indian Naval Immediate Support Vessel T-15, Senior Officer, ISVs (West), he spearheaded a team of 16 officers and 102 men to defend Oil-Field Exploration Areas on the Western Seaboard of India. He and his team were featured in a documentary shot by India Today TV which was aired on National Television on 26 Jan 2017.
