The above impulses to avoid the conversation or to just jump right in come from our focus and biases about what it will take to create our personally desired outcomes. We get so caught up in our own preconceived notions that we don't create conditions for the best possible outcomes to transpire.

Instead, we need to step back for a moment and think about how we can both create conditions where we can avoid our worst preconceived notions that make us want to avoid the crucial conversation and create conditions where our best preconceived notions about outcomes.

These can only occur when we take time to "grease the wheels" for constructive crucial conversations. We do that by intentionally building a pool of shared meaning at the outset of our conversation.
