*Why It's So Mysterious*
Numerous attempts at decipherment have been made, but none have been successful. Although some calendrical and what might prove to be genealogical information has been identified, none of the glyphs can actually be read.

*The Staggering Facts:*
Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, developed a script, now engraved on fewer than 30 wooden objects, which is still undeciphered
The new analysis also suggested the wood from the oldest tablet came from a tree species not native to Rapa Nui, and the researchers think it was probably a piece of driftwood
"What makes rongorongo so difficult is that we do not know what sort of script it is," wrote Alexander Lee for History Today last year. "No one is quite sure whether it is..." an alphabet, syllabary, or pictographic system

The undeciphered Rongorongo tablets of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) may yield their unknown stories if subjected to the long-used decipherment method of assigning phonic values based on the first or second (acrosyllabic) syllable of the words depicted by the pictorial signs.

But even this approach has failed because we don't know the original Rapa Nui language well enough!

🏺 *THE PHAISTOS DISC: THE WORLD'S MOST MYSTERIOUS OBJECT*

*The Impossible Artifact*
The Phaistos Disc, or Phaistos Disk, is a disc of fired clay from the island of Crete, Greece, possibly from the middle or late Minoan Bronze Age (second millennium BC), bearing a text in an unknown script and language.

*What Makes It Impossible to Decode:*
The Phaistos Disc features 241 symbols, comprising 45 unique characters. These symbols depict various everyday objects, human figures, and animals
The script on the Phaistos Disk is found on no other object, perhaps apart from the Arkalokhori axe. Thus the corpus of this script is tiny—far too small to be deciphered in any reliable way

*The Theories That Don't Work*
The philologist and archaeologist Gareth Owens suggested in 2014 that the language used on the disk was Indo-European and related to the Minoan language of Linear A, also undeciphered.

*The Problem:* We're trying to decode one unknown language using another unknown language!
