Newly developed Emirati housing is receiving considerable attention regarding sustainability and energy performance. Meanwhile, the huge stock of existing Emirati houses is having a warningly high Energy Use Intensity as they were built without putting the sustainability considerations into account. In order to help achieve the locally adopted Agenda, the existing housing sector should be sustainably transformed to comply with the local benchmark of EUI (140 kWh/m2/yr determined by the Ministry of Energy and Industry in the UAE, and 90 kWh/m2/yr defined by the Emirates Green Building Council). This research project proposes and investigates the efficiency of a new suggested ‘Hybrid Cladding Method’ for sustainable retrofitting of external walls of existing Emirati housing that could help achieve this goal.
