The 501st Legion was created during the Clone Wars at the request of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. Engaging in battles from Teth to Coruscant, they became the most respected soldiers in the galaxy. During Operation: Knightfall, they stood with Darth Vader when invading the Jedi Temple. And when the galaxy changed direction at the end of the Clone Wars, so did the 501st, becoming Darth Vader's personal unit.

The 501st became known as “Vader’s Fist,” and dedicated themselves to the Galactic Empire's service in their new role as stormtroopers. After the uprising on Kamino, they became the last battalion composed entirely of Jango Fett clones. As the Empire replaced the clone army, Darth Vader ensured that only the most exceptional soldiers were transferred to the 501st, a decision that sparked resentment among other Imperial agents who found themselves working with less qualified soldiers.
