'Wooly Bully' is a song originally recorded by rock 'n' roll band Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs in 1964. It was the band's first and biggest hit. It was released as a single on the small Memphis-based XL label in 1964 and was picked up in 1965 by MGM. It became a worldwide success, selling three million copies and reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on 5 June 1965.
Domingo 'Sam' Samudio (aka Sam the Sham) was one of the first rock organists to play and spotlight the Farfisa Combo Compact, it was most prominently used on his band's major hit 'Wooly Bully' in late 1964. Apparently, this was not the first track recorded on the Combo Compact, but it was the most noticeable at that time. As an example, the British band Pink Floyd (known then as Leonard's Lodgers and The Tea Set) used the Combo Compact organ since mid-64 and in December 1964 even probably used it for a recording of their first demo EP. However, this disc was released in limited quantities for promotional purposes only, and the tracks from it were not commercially available until 2015.
