Mandarin goby in 125 gallon saltwater aquarium. Mandarin fish are hard to care for. You should only add a mandarin to your aquarium if the tank has been setup at least one year and has a large supply of amphipods, or pods, for the mandarin to feed on. If these conditions are not met the mandarin will die of starvation within 2 weeks. My 125 gallon saltwater aquarium has been up for 1.5 years and has a large amounts of pods in the tank, both overflows and the refugium in the 2nd sump below the tank. I acclimated her to the tank via water transfer method. I did let the mandarin freshwater swim (RODI water at 76 degrees) for one minute before acclimating to the saltwater it would be placed into. I transferred between 3 tupperware bowls of fresh RODI water to make sure all the water was off her before acclimating to the saltwater. I added a half cup of saltwater every minute until it was 100% saltwater. Mandarin fish are not known for getting ich. I always quarantine everything that comes into my main tank but did not quarantine this fish. They are very sensitive to copper / cupramine and didn't want to risk it dying of starvation in the quarantine tank, where there are no pods to eat. Many have successfully fed these mandarin fish frozen mysis or pellets over time.
