The film is a sharp critique of 1950s American small-town conformity, pretense, and social climbing. Minnelli's direction is masterful, using vibrant, almost lurid Technicolor (especially in the famous carnival finale) to heighten the emotional turmoil. The standout performance is by Shirley MacLaine, who received her first Oscar nomination for her heartbreaking and vulnerable portrayal of Ginny, a woman utterly out of her depth but pure in her love. Sinatra delivers one of his finest dramatic performances, perfectly capturing Dave's bitterness and restless intelligence.
