DANA Never Gonna Fall in Love Again 1976 (FoD#62)

DANA sings Rachmaninoff! The Russian composer premiered the chorus of this lovely song in 1908. When Eric Carmen heard Symphony No.2 (Adagio) it inspired him to write Never Gonna Fall in Love Again. His 1976 single made #11 in the US, but only DANA’s version became a hit in the UK, entering the chart on 6 March where it remained for just four weeks, peaking prematurely at #31 on the 13th. Issued on GTO Records, it was her third UK hit in two years with them, after having just two hits in seven years with Rex Records (Decca).

This follow-up to It’s Gonna be a Cold Cold Christmas was promoted on numerous TV programmes, including the Cilla show seen here. Broadcast on Saturday 21 February 1976, it’s probably her best ever performance of the song, and instead of the normal fade out there's a nice new ending. She then sang Yesterday Once More with Cilla Black (FoD#51). Her next appearance in the hit parade came later that year when Fairytale achieved a 16-week chart run that began in October and ended in January 1977.

Trivia 1: Roy Hudd (seen at the start with Cilla) had recently finished starring in a panto in Oxford called Cinderella, who was played by DANA.
Trivia 2: After that panto had closed in January, her break was cut short by news that her future husband's hotel in Newry had been bombed (again!) by the Provisional IRA.
Trivia 3: It's unique for a recording artist to have two consecutive hits with songs containing the word "gonna" in the title.
Trivia 4: Eric Carmen had to pay Rachmaninoff's estate 12% of the royalties for two songs: this one and All By Myself.
