(21 Jan 2022) Sotheby's auction house in New York predicts a painting of Jesus Christ by Sandro Botticelli will sell for upwards of $40 million next week.
According to Christopher Apostle of Sotheby's New York, Botticelli painted "Man of Sorrows" late in his career, around 1500 or 1505.
The painting has been in a private family collection since 1963.  
Also at auction is "An Egyptian Limestone Figure of a Man," dating from around 2440-2355 B.C. Sotheby's expects to sell the sculpture in the neighborhood of 3 or 5 million dollars.  
Another feature of next week's sale is the painting "Portrait of a Lady as Pomona," also known as "Marquise de Parabère" by Nicolas de Largillière.
The Nazis acquired the painting during World War II. Writer Pauline Baer de Perignon recently wrote a book about reclaiming her great grandfather's art collection, including "Portrait of a Lady as Pomona."
The sale estimate is between $1 million and $1.5 million.
Sotheby's is also auctioning 200 pairs of sneakers in varying sizes by recently-deceased designer Virgil Abloh.
The shoes are titled "Louis Vuitton x Nike Air Force 1s."
Abloh made the shoes for the Louis Vuitton Spring-Summer 2022 Men's Collection.
The auction house estimates they will sell between $5,000 and $15,000 each.
