Frailty in Liver and Lung Transplantation: The Past, Present, and Future

Liver and lung transplantation are remarkable procedures that have saved hundreds of thousands of lives. While outcomes are influenced by the technical quality of the procedures, there are also complex patient factors that can impact survival. These factors may sometimes alter decisions about transplantation and modifying them can sometimes make the difference between life and death.

In this medical grand rounds, we’ll review the history and current status of transplantation, as well as future developments – with a particular focus on the role of patient frailty. We will learn about tools for assessing frailty in transplant patients and gain valuable insights for enhancing patient care in the transplant population and beyond.

Speakers
Jennifer Lai, MD, MBA, is a professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at UCSF Health. She is a practicing general/transplant hepatologist and board-certified physician nutrition specialist who specializes in caring for patients across the entire spectrum of liver disease, from diagnosis to liver transplant. As a clinical investigator, she serves as director of the UCSF Health Advancing Research in Clinical Hepatology (ARCH), the research arm of the UCSF Division of GI/Hepatology, as well as director of Patient-Facing Research Core of the NIH-funded UCSF Liver Center.

Jonathan Singer, MD, MS, is a professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine at UCSF Health. He specializes in the care of adults with advanced lung disease and lung transplant recipients. He is also the associate medical director of the Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplant clinical program and founded and now co-directs the UCSF Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplant Research Program, which is a cross-departmental group of investigators focused on clinical outcomes, translational, and basic research.
