This makes it an ideal environment for bacteria like E. coli, viruses, or parasites, which can cause serious illness if ingested or if contact is made with broken skin.

In addition, still water is more prone to temperature fluctuations, which can lead to water that's either too cold or too warm for safe swimming. This could cause hypothermia or overheating, depending on the situation.

Finally, stagnant water can encourage the growth of algae, some of which produce toxins harmful to both humans and animals. Exposure to toxic algae can result in skin rashes, respiratory issues, or even poisoning if consumed.
