A row has erupted after a pupil at a Church of England school refused to accept her classmate could identify as a cat.

The 13-year-old student and her friend were reprimanded by their teacher at Rye College in East Sussex during a Year 8 Life Education class in which they rejected the idea people can change sex.

A secret recording of the exchange published on Twitter has been listened to 4.4 million times.

TalkTV’s Julia Hartley-Brewer is joined by Education Select Committee member and Conservative MP Miriam Cates to discuss the story.

She tells Julia: “We have to draw a line somewhere, and that is the difference between reality and ideology.”
