From inside a military base last week, Myanmar's junta chief Min Aung Hlaing announced who he wanted voters to pick in Sunday's general election, nearly five years after seizing power in a coup.
"He suggested that during the upcoming election period, voters should choose candidates who can cooperate with the Tatmadaw," state-run media reported, referring to Myanmar's powerful armed forces.

Voting will be held in two phases, on Sunday and Jan. 11, in only 202 of Myanmar's 330 townships where the military has varying degrees of control
Dates for a potential third phase, counting or results have not been announced.

"The military is incapable of anything but cosmetic change that will not threaten their core interests of central control," said David Mathieson, an independent Myanmar analyst.
Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy, which won the last two general elections in 2020 and 2015, remains dissolved by the election commission, and many other anti-junta political outfits are not in the running

"Rather than stabilising the country, military-orchestrated elections are likely to intensify violence while failing to generate durable political or economic stability," said Ye Myo Hein, a senior fellow at the Southeast Asia Peace Institute non-profit.

Ukraine fires Storm Shadows, drones to hit Russia's oil, gas facilities
Ukraine launched British Storm Shadow missiles and its domestically produced long-range drones to hit several Russian oil and gas facilities, Ukrainian military and security officials said on Thursday.

It said the refinery was one of the biggest oil product suppliers in southern Russia and was supplying diesel and jet fuel to the Russian troops fighting in Ukraine.
Ukraine's SBU security service said that the locally made long-range drones hit oil product tanks in the Russian port of Temryuk in the Krasnodar region and a gas processing plant in Orenburg in southwestern Russia.

Kyiv has increased its strikes on Russia's oil refineries and other energy infrastructure since August as it seeks to cut Moscow's oil revenues, a key source of funding for its war effort.
The Ukrainian General Staff also said that Ukrainian troops hit a military airfield in the Russian city of Maikop in the republic of Adygea in the North Caucasus region

In a first, an Israeli Air Force helicopter gunship intercepted two drones during a smuggling attempt from Egypt into Israeli airspace on Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces said, releasing footage of the incident.

A senior air force official said the interception reflects a broader shift in Israel’s border-defense approach amid a surge in the use of drones to smuggle weapons across the border.
As part of a deep change in our border-defense doctrine, the air force has established control centers operating under the regional divisions, significantly improving detection capabilities and the direction of forces against low-altitude aerial threats,” the official said.
