The dedicated casting yard in Mahape, Thane district, is playing a crucial role in the construction of India’s first 21 km underground and undersea tunnel for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. This specialized facility is designed to cast the 77,000 tunnel lining segments required for the 16 km Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) portion.

Spanning an area of 11.17 hectares, the yard is equipped with nine advanced mould sets to produce 7,700 rings, each consisting of nine curved segments and a key segment. Using high-strength M70 grade concrete, the yard ensures superior structural integrity and long-term durability. In addition, Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bars are incorporated to control cracking, enhancing the tunnel’s strength.

The yard operates with cutting-edge technology, including three batching plants with a combined capacity of 207 cubic meters per hour. Automated cranes, gantries, and machines support efficient casting, while a state-of-the-art QA-QC lab monitors the quality and durability of each segment. The facility also includes steam curing and final curing areas, ensuring the segments meet stringent standards.

This robust casting yard is a critical component in advancing the ambitious bullet train project, which includes India’s first 7 km long undersea tunnel at Thane Creek. As construction progresses, Mahape’s casting yard remains central to ensuring the tunnel’s structural strength and timely completion
