Everybody has a digital camera these days. In fact more digital images have been made the past 5 years than all images combined in the previous 50. Digital cameras are so ubiquitous that most people carry one everywhere they go built right into their phone. Apps like Instagram and Flickr make sharing easy and most cameras now even include built-in WiFi for easy transfer and distribution.

But how did we get here. Few people know the real story.

Join us for a conversation with some of the real life, early pioneers in digital photography. Digital imaging was first adopted by news wire services like the Associated Press because their business was built on speed of delivery. Newspapers had deadlines and if you didn’t get your images to them before they sent the paper to the press, you didn’t get in print. In the early days photographers carried full darkrooms with tanks of caustic chemicals and enlargers to make prints. In fact, not much changed in image transfer and delivery from the first wire photo sent in 1935 until around 1988 when the transfer from analog to digital delivery began to pick up steam.

With the advent of digital imaging, there was no film to process and no prints to make greatly increasing the speed at which images could be delivered.

I’ll be talking with former AP photographers and editors like Scott Applewhite, Bob Daugherty, Ron Edmonds, Steve Hart and Brian Horton. I’ll also be joined by Nick Didlick and Rob Galbraith who managed the photo staffs of the Vancouver Sun and the Calgary Herald, two of the first newspapers in the world to commit fully to digital imaging. Rob also ran one of the most popular online message boards related to digital imaging for many years.

These guys revolutionized the news industry by using the early cameras our in the field on actual assignments, by transmitting images using early cell phones and modems sometimes at 300-1200 baud. They helped build out the infrastructure and brought digital photography into the mainstream as we know it now.

This wasn’t an easy transition. There was a lot of trial and error. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t. You’ll hear some great stories from all of these folks on how this all took place and how the foundation for digital imaging was laid.
