Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the French sculptor who designed the Statue of Liberty, visited Egypt in 1855-1856 and was inspired by the colossal monuments of ancient Egypt at Abu Simbel. In 1869, as construction of the Suez Canal was nearing completion, Bartholdi proposed to the Egyptian authorities to build a colossal statue at the entrance to the canal.

The initial design, titled “Egypt Carrying the Light to Asia”, depicted an Egyptian woman in traditional costume (fellah) carrying a large torch. However, this proposal was rejected by the Egyptian government due to its high cost.
