Welcome to Antique Vintage Saturday. Buick put a new face on its 1940 models. A big grin of thick horizontal chrome bars conspicuously announced all of them. Chrome was making a comeback in 1940 and these cars’ details offered lots of it—exaggerated parking-light housings, optional fender skirts and rectangular vents in the sides of the hood. Straight-eight engines powered all 1940 Buicks. V8s were yet to come, as the debate over vee-shaped and inline engines was still ongoing, the inline configuration thought to be inherently smoother. There were two powerplants for ’40. The Special and Super shared the 107-hp, 248-cid eight, the other models used a 141-hp, 320-cubic engine. Buick had a total of five lines—Special, Super, Century, Roadmaster and Limited—with a wide price range of $895 to $2,199. The top-of-the-line Limited offered two models, the Series 80 and 90. Series 80 bodies were set on a 133-inch wheelbase chassis; the 90 chassis had a 140-inch wheelbase. When new, these cars required a formal break-in period. They were not to be driven above 50 mph for the first 250 miles of use. For the second 250 miles, one could go a bit faster for short distances after the engine had warmed up. Sustained high speeds were not advised until the car had been driven 1000 miles. In 1940, Harlow Curtice was running Buick; he want-ed his top-of-the-line Limiteds to outshine all other cars, including Cadillacs. So he gave the customer a wide choice of not only trim options, but also entire body styles. Limited sedans and a convertible phaeton could be ordered in either a fastback or notchback configuration. In addition, coachbuilder Brunn & Co. offered a town car model on the Roadmaster chassis. Mechanical specifications were impressive, too, as the Buick Limited engine was rated at one more horsepower than the biggest Cadillac V8. This attention to detail heightened interest in the entire Buick line; 1940 was the marque’s first year of 300,000-unit production and an impressive 50 percent increase over 1939’s results. The Series 81 models included Sports Phaeton, four door sedan, four door Streamlined four door sedan, and this Streamlined formal sedan of which when we say limited we mean only 270 of these were manufactured and had a base price of $ 1.727.
