In this seminar, we will explore the impact of climate change on rural communities in western Himalayas, specifically in Ladakh and Uttarakhand and how they are responding to the problems with community-led adaptations. These adaptations are not solutions but show the community's efforts to overcome the challenges posed by climate change at the ground level. They show us possibilities to respond to the climate crisis with creativity, resilience and home-grown technologies and models that stem from the experiences of the community. We call these climate imaginaries, that are essentially alternative ways of responding to the climate crisis. Using creative media like animations, videos and podcasts, we highlight Himalayan community’s adaptations to climate change as an example for other communities, NGOs and the other stakeholders.

About the seminar:

The online seminar was conducted on the topic 'Developing Grounded Imaginaries: Communities in Action in the Himalayan Region' in Visayas State University, Philippines on May 4, 2023. It was organised as part of a workshop on Basic Concepts of Inclusively Co-Creating Citizen Science' during the International Training Program (ITP) 2023 - Philippines. This program is a collaboration between Hasselt University (UHasselt) - Belgium in collaboration with the Visayas State University (VSU) and the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), funded by the Flemish Interuniversity Council–University Development Cooperation (VLIR-UOS). Special thanks to Dr.Maristela do Nascimento Rocha Post-doctoral researcher, UHasselt for her support and cooperation in enabling the Grounded Imaginaries project to reach a wider audience.
