Seven Marines have died and seven more were injured in a mortar training accident in the Nevada desert. The Marines were in live-fire training with the M224 60mm lightweight mortar.
In normal operation, the firing pin strikes the mortar's ignition cartridge, activating the propellent and firing the mortar. In Monday's accident the mortar round failed to leave the tube, either due to a faulty propellent assembly or because it exploded prematurely due to a malfunctioning fuse. Seven Marines were killed. Seven others are being treated for severe injuries.
The cause of Monday's accident is still being investigated. The Pentagon has suspended the use of all high-explosive and illumination mortar rounds manufactured in the same lots as those used Monday.
