Описание к видео Defenders of Oasis (Game Gear) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Sega's 1992 role-playing game for the Sega Game Gear, Defenders of Oasis.

The Game Gear had a lot of good games for it, but unlike the Genesis, it suffered from a sore lack of RPGs. There were plenty of "RPG-esque" games for the system - games like Shining Force or Dragon Crystal, but it only had one traditional, turn-based JRPG released for it in English during its lifetime.

And it was awesome.

Defenders of Oasis isn't what you'd call a complex game, but it is a blast for the scant hours it lasts. It plays just like Phantasy Star, Dragon Quest, or Final Fantasy. You wander around, witness some most non-non-heinous stuff, and then proceed, talk to townspeople, fight in old caves and castles, and everything that one does through a menu.

What really sets Defenders of Oasis apart from the typical RPG, console or handheld, is its setting. It comes across as a fast and lose take on Aladdin or the 1001 Nights - kind of like The Magic of Scheherazade on the NES. Instead of wandering primarily through forests and English hamlet look-a-likes, you wander through an old-timey version of the Middle East, Genie at your side, as you standing fighting in the name of religion, country, and family. I loved the game because of its setting and it's somewhat adult tone - it stood out, and it would have even if the Game Gear had had a bit more choice for RPGs.

The graphics and sound are also very good for a Game Gear game. There isn't much animation, but the battle graphics look great with detailed enemies filling the screen and the town/field graphics loaded with little but thoughtful touches. Water animates, houses have furniture, you can read at every bookshelf - it's full of stuff that seems routine now, but handheld gamers in the early 90s weren't accustomed to much like it at the time. The bosses even let out distorted screams when they die - I have no idea what it's saying, but still, how cool is that?

If you like Game Gear or Master Systen stuff, this is a great pick. It's a first-party Sega title, and its quality reflects that.

It's also available on the 3DS, if you want to play it on a more modern platform. It's well worth the pittance they're asking for it. It was well worth the $40 is cost back in 1992, and with it now being available digitally for $4, you couldn't ask for better bang for your buck.

Oh, and sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it's not related to Beyond Oasis nor The Legend of Oasis. If you had your hopes up, I mean.

*Recorded in Retroarch with LCD shaders.
