To celebrate NZF legend Wynton Rufer's birthday, we took a look back at one of the finest moments in the history of New Zealand Football.

Heading into this match, The All Whites were presented with the highly improbable task of winning by six goals in order to climb above group leaders China on a matter of goal difference. The players came out determined and managed to lead by a whopping 5 goals by half time, through braces from Rufer and Brian Turner as well as a great long range strike by Steve Woodin.

The team held their nerve, protected their lead, and came away with a clean sheet, meaning that the seemingly impossible task of qualifying had just become incredibly possible.

This huge feat combined with a hard-fought win against China in the next and final match of the group stage meant that New Zealand had secured FIFA World Cup Qualification for the first time in history.
