On 20 June 2024, Graeme Reid, the UN Human Rights Council-mandated Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, presented his first report in this role to the Council at its 56th session in Geneva, Switzerland.

Among other concerns, Mr. Reid noted "ever-expanding restrictions on the human rights to freedom of expression, of peaceful assembly and of association, based on sexual orientation and gender identity. These freedoms are fundamental and indispensable to democracy and are essential to the effective functioning of civil society."
