The HITECH act aims to enhance patient care by improving patient access to more detailed health records and to facilitate well-coordinated transitions of care. To comply, healthcare entities must have the capacity to share digitized clinical information in a secure manner. Many providers across the healthcare spectrum, however, lack the budget and resources necessary to implement electronic document exchange capabilities. This is especially true of post-acute care providers, who take care of an estimated 8 million patients per year. Is true interoperability out of reach for this important market?
