Описание к видео Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Workshop at Webb School's Unbounded Days 2016

Please visit our website at http://www.blueheronarts.com for Chinese calligraphy brush, ink, paper and classes.
Here is the handout for the workshop:
Victoria Li started the workshop with a stunning performance of two-hand calligraphy. Then she taught the stuidetns the eight strokes of the character Yong eternalty.

Henry Li introduced a young Chinese artist whose name is Wang Yani. Her animal paintings are known throughout the world. China even put one of her monkey paintings on a postage stamp. We discussed rice paper, mood, color (value and shade), line (movement and stillness), shape (repetition and balance), and style (xieyi) with the students. The students then will created an ink and brush painting with monkeys or their favorite animals.

Definitions:
• Rice paper - an absorbent painting paper that is very sensitive to moisture, pressure and speed, which is very different than painting on regular drawing or watercolor paper. Don’t use pencil on the rice paper – it can rip.
•Mood – the mood of a painting is the feeling a painting gives us.
• Tonality (referring to the ink shade) – ink can be lightened with water or darkened with inkstick to get different tones. Note: only a TINY amount of ink is needed on your brushes. You can always add more ink to your painting; you can never remove it!

• Value – the lightness or darkness of a color. Ink is also considered as color from blackest black to palest gray. Test the shade on a scrap paper.
• Line – Chinese painting is very calligraphic. You can get thin and thick lines by lifting and pressing the brush. Notice the gesture of strokes. Straight lines in a painting indicate stillness; wavy or curved lines indicate movement.
• Contrast – refers to the opposites in values, colors, textures, shapes, and other elements. Contrast creates visual excitement and adds interest to the work. Chinese painting is characterized by the use of black ink against the white background.
• Emphasis (referred to as the “host and guest” relationship in Chinese painting) – used by the artist to create dominance and focus in their work. Artists can emphasize the value, color, shapes, or other art elements on the host to achieve dominance.
• Balance – refers to the distribution of visual weight in a work of art. Balance can be symmetrical or asymmetrical. Signature and red seal plays important role of balance in Chinese brush painting.
• Xieyi (“Idea Writing”) is the Chinese word for spontaneous style of painting. The idea must come first before the actual painting. This spontaneous style of painting captures the life and vitality that the Chinese value in their painting.
