Centre & State Govt Set to Review the Scope of AFSPA in Manipur as 6-Month Extension Expires | News9

The central and state governments are set to review the scope of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Manipur, as its current six-month extension is due to expire on September 30. Since the start of ethnic violence, the "disturbed area" status in the hill districts has been extended twice, in September 2023 and March 2024, citing the inability to conduct proper ground assessments due to security forces being occupied with law and order. Experts have argued that while armed groups are active in both the valley and hill districts, the absence of AFSPA in the valley hampers effective military operations.
