If you love to sing, you want to keep singing for a long time. Here are 5 of the best exercises for vocal maintenance.

Full-range glides/sirens

You choose what to sing on: I recommend something semi-closed like a lip trill or NG sound. The idea here is that we access our lowest pitches, our highest pitches, and everything in between. Think of this as a gentle stretch, with no pressure if your voice cracks or cuts out here and there.

Straw singing

Speaking of semi-closed exercises, if you had to choose just one, straw singing is the way to go. It helps reduce swelling and fatigue, which is great for maintaining your vocal health! Grab a straw and sing an easy OO sound. If you’re not certain that you’re doing it correctly, get a glass of water, submerge the straw, and do the same thing. If you get sound and bubbles, that means you’re doing it right!

You can use straw singing for those full-range glides, for any other warmup pattern you like, and even for song work, singing the melody through a straw.

Rich hum

One last semi-closed exercise for you. A hum is so simple, and it’s still semi-closed, which helps us achieve balance without great effort, but it’s also pretty similar to singing an open vowel. You can easily transition from humming to singing an AH or UH.

I say rich hum for a reason, though. I could hum like this and train that kind of tone, or like this and train this kind of tone. Keep a little space inside your mouth: space between your top and bottom back teeth as well as space between your tongue and the roof of your mouth.

Scales on a narrow vowel

Narrow vowels like OO and EE are wonderful for vocal maintenance because they ease the transition from chest voice to head voice, making it easier to cover a wide range. Speaking of wide range, for this exercise I’m using the full major scale. Feel free to try out both OO and EE, and choose whichever vowel feels easiest to you!

Arpeggios on a medium/open vowel

For our last maintenance exercise, we’ll open up the vowel and incorporate some leaps. While semi-closed exercises and narrow vowels are typically the easiest and most gentle for your voice, we also want to practice singing with the balance that an open vowel requires. After all, much of our singing occurs on open vowels. Try a few of these with me!

There you have it! 5 simple but effective exercises for vocal maintenance. If you do these regularly, you’ll keep your voice active and flexible.
