Did you know that if you’re traveling alone with your kids, you might need a travel consent letter from the other parent? I didn’t either until I had a close call at the border!

The last time I was reentering Canada from the U.S., the immigration officer asked me for a consent letter from their father. I didn’t have it, and she warned me to always carry one. It’s not just a formality, it’s needed to confirm that the children aren’t being taken out of the country without the other parent’s permission.

So, what is a travel consent letter?
It’s a signed document from the other parent (or legal guardian) granting permission for the child to travel. It’s often required for international trips and, in some cases, even for domestic travel.

Steps to Get a Travel Consent Letter:

✅ 1. Prepare the Details: Include your child’s full name, date of birth, and passport number (if applicable). Add your travel details, such as destination, dates, and flight information.
✅ 2. Get it Signed: The parent giving consent should sign the letter. It’s highly recommended to have the signature notarized to make it official.
✅ 3. Carry Supporting Documents: Bring copies of your child’s birth certificate and, if applicable, custody agreements to provide additional proof of relationship and consent.
✅ 4. Keep it Accessible: Always have the letter handy when traveling, border officers might ask for it at any point.
