Rounding off a busy morning of engagements in London Wednesday, the South African President met the British Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street.

In the second of their joint engagements of the day, Nelson Mandela and John Major met to discuss a number of issues.

Topics on the agenda included the control of inflation and crime in South Africa, and an extra package of assistance from the U-K.

Still showing no sign of slowing down, Nelson Mandela arrived at 10 Downing for lunch and talks with John Major.

It was his fourth engagement of the day.

By noon local time, he'd already planted a commemorative tree, zipped back to Buckingham Palace to receive the leader of the opposition and the Commonwealth Secretary General, and addressed business leaders at a trade conference.

At a news conference after lunch, Major spoke of his guest with warmth and admiration.

For his part, Mandela thanked Britain for its support of the anti-apartheid movement and the fledgling democracy.

What has happened in South Africa in recent years is historic, no one looking back a few years could have possibly imagined the changes that are taking place. I think those changes are truly remarkable in every way. And it is partly because of those, partly because of the symbolism of having you with us today Nelson as the particular symbol of those changes in South Africa.

The United Kingdom has been an active supporter of the anti-apartheid struggle in our country.

The President also confirmed his plans to stand down from office at the end of his current term.

SOUNDBITE:
I don't think that it is proper, even at the present moment, that a robust country like South Africa should be led by a septuagenarian. I think we need a younger man with a drive who can put this country on a new footing. And we've many such men and women in the leadership of the ANC.

Major said he was pleased to be able to tell Mandela that Britain could provide further technical assistance to South Africa.

Major also hopes Britain could help South Africa by negotiating the best possible relationship with the European Union so as to ensure the widest possible market for the country's products.
