In China, Pinduoduo is an e-commerce heavyweight. Some 750 million people in China each month use the app which is now under fire over malware. CNN has spoken to an array of cybersecurity experts who say they have identified malware in versions of Pinduoduo. "We found that it uses techniques to get extended functionality," says Check Point APAC President Sharat Sinha. "I have never seen anything like that before," adds cyber-security expert and Oversecure founder Sergey Toshin. "This is highly unusual, and it is pretty damning for Pinduoduo," says WithSecure Chief Research Officer Mikko Hyppönen. "Our team has reverse engineered that code and we can confirm that it tries to escalate rights, tries to gain access to things normal apps wouldn't be able to do on Android phones." CNN also spoke to a Pinduoduo employee who says the company in 2020 set up a team of about 100 engineers and product managers to dig for vulnerabilities in Android phones and develop ways to exploit them and make a profit. Pinduoduo's parent company PDD Holdings did not respond to CNN requests for comment. The allegations are casting a cloud on the Nasdaq-listed company and its global push with its international app Temu, and comes at a time of heightened tension and security concerns over tech that’s "Made in China."
