We operate from a home safety inspection checklist. We begin at the electrical panel. Here, we look for loose wires, double taps, corrosion, water intrusion, and burn spots.

Next, we inspect the electrical service equipment on the outside of the home to be sure it's in good shape. It’s important to check for damaged or loose equipment.

Factors we consider in the home electrical safety inspection are:

• The age of the home
• Type of wiring used

We also check exterior wiring and devices and interior outlets near water (in bathrooms and kitchens), which need ground fault circuit interrupters to protect against electrical shock.

With a plug tester, we check that the accessible receptacles throughout the house are wired correctly and we take a look at major connections, such as the air conditioning unit, for any visual damage. We also check smoke detectors to ensure proper operation and ask about their age – smoke detectors are usually recommended to be changed every 10 years.
