꽃이 오랫동안 피어 있어서 백일홍나무라고 하며, 나무껍질을 손으로 긁으면 잎이 움직인다고 하여 간즈름나무 또는 간지럼나무라고도 한다. 높이 약 5m이다. 나무껍질은 연한 붉은 갈색이며 얇은 조각으로 떨어지면서 흰 무늬가 생긴다. 작은가지는 네모지고 털이 없다. 새가지는 4개의 능선이 있고 잎이 마주난다. 잎은 타원형이거나 달걀을 거꾸로 세워놓은 모양이며 길이 2.5∼7cm, 너비 2∼3cm이다. 겉면에 윤이 나고 뒷면에는 잎맥에 털이 나며 가장자리가 밋밋하다.
꽃은 양성화로서 7∼9월에 붉은색으로 피고 가지 끝에 원추꽃차례로 달린다. 꽃차례는 길이 10∼20cm, 지름 3∼4cm이다. 꽃잎은 꽃받침과 더불어 6개로 갈라지고 주름이 많다. 수술은 30∼40개로서 가장자리의 6개가 길고 암술은 1개이다. 열매는 삭과(蒴果)로서 타원형이며 10월에 익는다. 보통 6실이지만 7∼8실인 것도 있다.
흰색 꽃이 피는 것을 흰배롱나무(for. alba)라고 하는데, 인천광역시에서 자란다. 중국 원산이며 관상용으로 재배한다. 꽃은 지혈·소종의 효능이 있어, 한방에서 월경과다·장염·설사 등에 약으로 쓴다.

The one with white flowers is called the white crape myrtle (for. alba), and it grows in Incheon. It is native to China and is cultivated for ornamental purposes. The flowers have the effect of stopping bleeding and reducing swelling, and are used as a medicine in oriental medicine for excessive menstruation, enteritis, and diarrhea.
