Eliminate preventable cancer deaths

On January 12, 2016, President Barack Obama laid out a moon shot goal in his final State of the Union address: to end cancer as we know it. Cancer, however, isn’t one disease; it’s many. While medicine and science continue making steady progress, cancer remains the number one killer, behind heart disease. The Cancer Visioneers team will take a fresh look at the disease, dissecting it from every angle to come up with innovative approaches to preventing, detecting and treating this devastating disease.

Landscape:

Currently, 36 percent of all cancer across the globe is preventable. Fifty percent of cancer deaths in the U.S. alone are preventable. Cancer prevention and diagnosis is ripe for innovation. Imagine how many lives could have been saved if everyone had access to a simple cancer screening test.

The Cancer Moonshot provides an opportunity to modify our approach to preventing, detecting, treating and curing cancer. It is also a chance to maximize scientific, analytical, and multidisciplinary collaborative advancements to double our rate of progress over the next five years.

In response to the Cancer Moonshot call to action, the Cancer Visioneers Team is designing a challenge where bridges are built, opportunity reaches the motivated, and ingenuity is rewarded. The XPRIZE model will activate the crowd and unite collaboration and ingenuity across this wide cancer ecosystem.
