In 2012, Brisbane Airport Corporation was able to commence with the site preparation stage of Brisbane’s New Runway. This stage took five years and was one of the biggest challenges of the project.

This video explains the four stages of site preparation undertaken at Brisbane Airport, including clearing the land, dredging and reclamation, wick drain installation and sand settlement.

Brisbane’s new runway is the completion of long-term planning for Brisbane Airport which commenced in the 1970s. Construction of the new runway began in 2012, with the official opening on Sunday 12 July 2020.

The new runway gives Brisbane the most efficient runway system in Australia. It will serve the needs of South East Queensland for decades to come, maintaining and growing our connections with the world as our city continues to grow, while building the gateway to Queensland & Australia.
